Getaway Shootout Controls: How to Move When You Can Only Jump
Published · 2 min read
The first thing new players do in Getaway Shootout is press A and D, and nothing happens. New Eich Games left the walk out on purpose. Every character moves by jumping: one key throws you to the left, the other to the right, and a third fires whatever you are holding. Learning the keys takes ten seconds. Learning the rhythm is the actual game.
The keys
- Player 1: W jumps left, E jumps right, R fires or uses the item.
- Player 2: I jumps left, O jumps right, P fires or uses the item.
- Menus: the mouse. Pick 1 Player to race three computer runners or 2 Player for a friend on the same keyboard.
The two sets of keys sit at opposite ends of the keyboard, which is the point: two people can play side by side on one laptop without hands crossing.
Short hops and long jumps
A tap gives a short hop that moves you about a body width. Holding the key charges a longer, higher jump that clears gaps and lands you on ledges, but a long jump that lands on a slope or on another runner tips your character over, and a runner on the floor takes a second to stand up. On flat stretches, alternate quick taps of the two keys. Save the held jumps for gaps you can see.
Landing on people
Runners are solid. If you land on someone, you push them into the floor and bounce off them. On the rooftop level the leader is usually a step ahead on a narrow ledge, and a hop onto their head both passes them and knocks them down. The computer rivals do this to you as well, so if one is right behind you, jump before they do.
Picking things up
Weapons and crates drop onto the course during a round. You collect one by touching it; there is no pickup key. You carry one item at a time, and picking up a second replaces the first, so do not hop through a pistol if you are holding a rocket launcher. R (or P) uses it. Guns fire in the direction you are facing, and you face the way of your last jump.
What the game runs on
The version on this site is the original Unity WebGL build, hosted here, so it loads in the page with no download. It runs on a school Chromebook; if it stutters, close other tabs and use the Fullscreen button under the player rather than zooming the browser. A round is thirty seconds to a minute, and a match is a series of rounds, so a break between lessons is enough time to finish one.
